The image of two athletes on the lawn on the San Jose State University's campus, Tommie Smith and John Carlos then when the medal program was under way each fired a black-gloved hand toward the night sky as the U.S. flag was raised and "The Star-Spangled Banner" played in 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Smith won the 200 meters, Carlos finished third.

The gesture remains an icon for those who remember 1968, a turbulent year that included the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. Kids were sticking flower stems into the gun barrels of National Guardsmen. In Vietnam it was the Têt offensive, in Czechoslovakia it was Prague Spring, an uprising against the Communists. Ten days before the Olympics were to begin, Mexican security forces massacred students occupying the national university.
