Salavat Yulaev (1752-1800) is a Bashkir national hero and a poet. He was one of the leaders of the Peasant war of 1773-75 in Russia and a fellow-fighter of Yemelyan Pugachev. In 1774 he was arrested, punished and sent to hard labour in Estonia, where he died in 1880.

Yulaev as a poet and fighter against tsarism became a legendary figure in Bashkiria. His improvisational poetry called for fighting against oppressors and celebrated the beauty of his native land.

The statue depicts Salavat as he takes fateful decision to obey the order to support the governmental troops and come over to Pugachev's side. A great view over Belaya (White) River opens from here.
