Japanese carps at the Palm house in the Garden of Auteuil Greenhouses in Paris

The Auteuil greenhouses were designed by Jean-Camille Formigé (1845-1926) in the late 19th century to nurture flowers for the public gardens of Paris. Today, the elegant glass and steel structures are still standing proud, enclosing impressive collections of plants and set in charming gardens that take on new colours with every season.

The 16-metre high dome of the largest greenhouse encloses a rich variety of palm trees. A miniature model of the structure allows birds to flutter in the warmth, while large fish swim in the pond. Coffee, mango and papyrus flourish in the tropical greenhouse, while, at the back of the garden, smaller greenhouses constructed in the 1970s house an impressive collection of begonias, carnivorous plants, ferns, cacti and orchids.
