The Shwezigon Pagoda or Shwezigon Paya is located in Nyaung-U, a town near Bagan. It is the prototype of Burmese stupas, and consists of a circular gold leaf gilded stupa surrounded by paradise trees, smaller temples and shrines. Construction of the Shwezigon Pagoda began during the reign of King Anawrahta and was completed A.D. 1102 during the reign of his son, King Kyansittha. The Pagoda is believed to enshrine a bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha. As a result it is one of the most important religious shrines and pilgrim destinations, and not purely an archaeological site.
