In its medieval golden age under the despotic Scaligeri princes (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaligeri ), Verona reached the pinnacle of its influence and prestige, developing into a town that, even today, is among the great cities of Italy. The best-known member of the ruling Della Scala family, Cangrande I (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cangrande_I_della_Scala ), was a patron of Dante. His sway over Verona (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verona ) has been compared to that of Lorenzo the Magnificent (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_the_Magnificent ) over Florence (http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence ).
