One of the liveliest hangout areas in Liepāja concentrates around the Promenade. Once a closed territory, today it became a popular leisure spot that attracts people at all times of the day and night.

Promenade’s everyday life is tightly connected with the Tirdzniecibas (Trade) canal that flows along the quay. The canal divides the city into two parts and connects the Baltic Sea and the Liepāja Lake. For centuries it has played an important role in the economic life of the city. As a gold vein it has attracted numerous entrepreneurs, who could use its advantages in their businesses – sawyers, dockers, fishermen, manufacturers…

Today, the first to meet visitors on the Promenade is the decorative amber hour-glass, which was made from amber donated by townspeople.

A newcomer at the Promenade is the sailer 'Libava', which was build in 2008, following the traditions of shipbuilding of the 17th century. Plans of sailer’s owners, former fishermen who have decided to switch to the marine tourism, are extensive. Apart from the Liepāja region they include trips to such places as Curonian Spit in Lithuania, Saaremaa and Ruhnu islands in Estonia and Gotland in Sweden.

One of the main attractions of the Promenade is the entertaining complex of Louis Fontaine. It includes the Delisnack bar, with pizzas and Mexican and Chinese specialities on the menu, music club Fontaine Palace and the new funky hotel Fontaine Royal.

The silhouette of the sea pilot tower rises at the end of the Promenade. Built in 1821, until the middle of the 19th century it has also served as a lighthouse. From the top of the tower opens an exciting panorama over the canal and the sea gates of the city.
