Jacob Hägg (1839-1931) and Herman af Sillén (1857-1908) both received considerable public attention though opinions were divided as to the value of the kind of art they represented. They were
experts on ships and boats and skilful at documenting, but many did not regard them to be artists. Is this also true today? An art historian, an art critic and a naval historian comment on the seascapes.

Hägg and Sillén had a lot in common – they were colleagues and professional soldiers who both chose to express their love for the sea in their artwork. They also both fought for a future naval history museum in Stockholm.
